Anastasia means resurrection in the greek and prior to conceiving her I had a miscarriage with my first child. Her middle name is Aurora which means new light in latin. I love this name because of how much the meaning really suits her. When she enters a room she brings an instant light and joy.

I love my name! But it sounds so girly and princessy thats what I don’t like about it, I go by Stacee it’s just spelled differently than the original Stacy, some of my friends call me Ana and my closest friends and family call me by my name Anastasia!

Prior to giving birth I had been praying about her name. Prior to Anastasia I had a miscarriage which completely broke me, so when I first got pregnant with her I was still dealing with the loss of her sibling. As I was praying I felt impressed on my heart that her name was to ve Anastasia. I thought maybe I heard it wrong, but then I looked up the meaning. Anastasia is the ancient greek means resurrection. This was funny to my husband and I because we had been calling her Rezie, short for resurrection. That’s when we knew that was her name, she is our resurrection.

My ex wanted to name our daughter Stacy. I never liked that name and it reminded me of a girl he had a crush on during the beginning of our relationship. My middle name is Ann. So, one day it just hit me. I thought how about Anastasia. She can choose from so many nicknames like Ana, Natasha, Stacy, or Asia. During her young years we called her Asia. Then she can decide later what name she wants to use. Today she prefers her full name Anastasia. I’ve also learned recently, after 28 yrs, that it’s pronounced differently in Russia. I pronounced it Ana-stay-shia. A Russian acquaintance told me it’s pronounced Ahna-Stah-zee-a. When I mentioned it to my daughter, she told me she always liked the Russian pronunciation better but all of our family was stuck pronouncing it the American way. And so we still continue to learn! I love it pronounced either way. I love her! My only child.

We loved the name Anastasia, but during an extremely tough time in our lives, and during the preganancy, we looked up the meaning of her name. It comes from the Greek word anastasias–which means resurrection. During the pregnancy I had a severe cough/illness that lasted more than 3 months, my husband and I separated due to–at the time–irreconcilable differences, and I also had a 2 month foot injury in the very beginning of the pregnancy. My husband also lost his job. Her pregnancy represented the most trying time in our lives. Yet God gave us words of hope during the entire time, and comforted us with His presence: That there would be a turnaround, a resurrection after the trials. And there was. I’ve recovered, my husband and I reconciled and have a stronger marriage than ever before–just before she was born. We thank God for our personal resurrection and our resurrection baby!

We chose the name Anastasia in remembrance of my husband’s grandmother who shared the same name. We also wanted something to reflect his Greek
heritage. I love how feminine it is and it’s also not a name that is super popular right now.

We are Orthodox Christians and live by a church calendar of fasts, feasts and other cycles. My sweet little girl was born in the early days of Lent and would enter the church for the first time (which involves a beautiful ceremony) right around Easter, the Feast of Feasts. Her name means “resurrection” and will always remind me of my favorite time of year and the feast that we celebrated when we first became Orthodox. All of my kids have Russian names as well, reflecting their father’s culture.

It is beautiful and meaningful to us as Christian parents. I liked the way it sounded and looked. Was reminded of it from a book and some of my favorite songs to sing were from the Anastasia movie.
