Dominic Name Meaning

A handsome moniker with a deeply religious side, Dominic has always maintained a healthy level of popularity. He’s one of those familiar faces that everyone knows, yet he isn’t seen to the point of oversaturation.

Meaning “of the Lord”, he’s a great choice for religious parents looking for something that’s not so obvious like Christian or Jesus. He’s also a saint name, appearing as several over the years including Saint Dominic of Silos, the patron saint of pregnant women and shepherds. It’s a lovely association, seeing that every parent hopes to see their little one grow to tend to their own “flock” or family someday.

Dominic is quite a strong name for a little guy to carry around, yet he can be softened up with all sorts of nicknames like Dom and Nicky. There’s the insanely cute childhood Domino as well if you’re looking for something unexpected. He also has more mature choices to browse as well like Nico and Nic.

Dominic has a few spelling alternatives to explore like Dominick and Dominik if you feel like fluffing up his look. There are also a few variations like Dominico, Dominicus, and Domingo to check out. He doesn’t need too much change if you ask us, however, as Dominic has plenty of charm to go around.

  1. Strong and handsome name

  2. Dominic is named after St. Dominic Savio, a young boy who had a great love for God and a defender of God’s holy name. I’ve always admired the pure love and innocence of this boy rather to die than sin gravely and offend God and want my son to be able to have a role model as that to live up to.

We like the name because it’s classy but I don’t know many people by that name. It’s a good name for him to grow into as well.

  3. I love the name dominic becoz my parents gave it for me for reason

    • God is good

  4. I have a very special Uncle who has since passed that was named Dominic, but it really was just a plus that my son and 2x Great Uncle share the same name. I even dreamed about baby names but my husband was not a fan. I moved to my husbands home town which is very Americana and I miss my more culturally diverse home. I knew I wanted my son to have a name that was Italian. While Dominic is not necessarily an Italian name, it has that feel. A lot of Catholic Italians back in the day named their sons Dominic. But how did we come up with it, honestly, I prayed to God, “what is our son’s name?” and one day the name popped into my mind. My husband said, he liked it but we never settled on it we just gradually started calling him Dominic while I was pregnant. Everyone I told his name to stressed how much they loved that name. I often just think, how much I love his name! That’s what putting your trust in God gets you!!

  5. My baby’s name is Edwin Dominic. In my husband’s family tradition. The middle name is what the baby is called in the first name they named after family member. My husband is Puerto Rican and I am Italian therefore Edwin for the Spanish side and Dominic for the Italian side.

  6. I thought about my godfather who was from Dominica, he passed away. I wanted to keep him alive somehow, plus I always wanted to go. I also wanted his name to be a representation of Christ.

  7. We liked the name Dominic because it’s a nice Catholic name that’s more interesting than typical New Testament names. Dominic means “belonging to God” in Latin, which seemed appropriate for our miracle rainbow baby. It took almost six years to have him and we had several losses. The stories of St. Dominic are also fascinating, particularly the reasoning behind him being depicted with a dog. From an article quoting Fr. Ezra Sullivan “When St. Dominic’s mother, Blessed Jane of Aza, was pregnant, she had a dream of a dog with a torch in its mouth, running around the world and setting everything on fire. She went to the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos and asked a monk what it meant. He replied that the child in her womb would be a great preacher, who would set the world ablaze with the fire of his words.”

  8. Dominic is my firstborn son, and the Latin roots of his name are “of our Lord.” We paired it with Adam as his middle name, so He is our first manchild from God.

  9. Family name

  10. The father and I choosed Dominic as a tribute to a friend of his who lost their son. We agreed on the name cause its different. I like the name and it’s meaning. It fits him perfectly.

  11. My husband and I both had a short list of names and Dominic was on both! I liked the meaning “Of/from God.” We are people of faith and everything about Dominic, from conception
to birth is of/from God. He is our rainbow baby after multiple losses. Also, I think his nickname is cool. I call him Niko.

  12. I name him after his Dad

  13. I chose his name because he had to go to the nursery due to being preterm (5weeks). Dominoc means “of the Lord; belonging to the Lord”.

  14. I love this name Dominic my husband named his

  15. The name was picked after the Fast and The serious

  16. I chose Dominic Brady Felix Baxter. Dominic because it is unique, Brady after my grandfather and Felix because he is my ranbow baby so he is lucky.

  17. I picked the name from the man on the fast and the furious Dominic Torreto. I love the movie and I love the guy and name… So figured that is what we would name him should of out torreto in there too but its ok.

  18. We love that Dominic means “belonging to the Lord.” It was often given to boys born on Sundays and our son was born on a Sunday. I like that it’s unique enough that you don’t hear it often, but not too unique or hard for people to pronounce.
